Qualifications

I earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University in 2027. I also hold a Master of Arts in Psychology from Wake Forest University, a Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology from Saint Joseph’s College, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Villanova University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting from Duke University, where I specialized in judgment and decision-making research.

Prior to becoming a counselor, I served for more than twenty-five years as a university accounting professor at the University of Florida, Drexel University, and Wake Forest University.

In addition to my counseling education, I completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Moses Cone Hospital. Through this advanced clinical training, I provided spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams in medical, trauma, intensive care, behavioral health, oncology, palliative care, hospice, and end-of-life settings. This experience strengthened my skills in crisis intervention, grief counseling, trauma-informed care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and compassionate presence during times of acute illness and loss.

I currently practice as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) in North Carolina under the supervision required by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors.

Counseling Background

I provide counseling services for adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups experiencing concerns including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, stress management, adjustment difficulties, relationship concerns, workplace concerns, trauma, life transitions, caregiver stress, spiritual concerns, and personal growth.

My counseling philosophy is collaborative, strengths-based, and holistic. I believe every individual possesses inherent dignity, resilience, and the capacity for growth. Counseling is a collaborative process that helps clients identify strengths, develop effective coping strategies, increase self-awareness, and work toward meaningful personal goals.

My theoretical orientation is integrative and draws primarily from:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Person-Centered Therapy
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
  • Strategic Family Therapy
  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions
  • Spiritually Integrated Counseling (when requested by the client)

Treatment approaches are individualized according to each client’s presenting concerns, goals, culture, values, and preferences.

Restricted Licensure and Clinical Supervision

As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA), I practice under a restricted license issued by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors. North Carolina law requires that all LCMHCAs receive ongoing supervision from a Board-approved Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS) while completing post-licensure experience requirements.

My clinical supervisor is:

Shevene Bryant, MS, LCMHCS
Employee Assistance Counseling Program
Cone Health
336-538-7484

Clinical supervision is intended to support ethical, competent, and effective counseling services. Information shared during supervision remains confidential and is disclosed only as necessary for professional consultation and in accordance with applicable laws and ethical standards.

Session Fees and Length of Services

Counseling sessions generally last approximately 50 minutes.

Fees for counseling services vary depending upon the services provided. Payment may be accepted through cash, personal check, credit card, debit card, electronic payment methods, or insurance when applicable.

If insurance is accepted, clients are responsible for understanding their insurance benefits, deductibles, copayments, and any limitations on coverage.

Use of Diagnosis

Some health insurance companies reimburse clients for counseling services, while others do not. Most insurance companies require that a mental health diagnosis be assigned before counseling services are eligible for reimbursement.

Some concerns that bring individuals to counseling may not meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis. If a diagnosis is clinically appropriate, I will discuss it with you before submitting it to your insurance company. Any diagnosis submitted for insurance reimbursement becomes part of your permanent health insurance record.

Confidentiality

Your privacy is extremely important. Information discussed during counseling sessions is confidential and will not be disclosed without your written authorization except as permitted or required by law.

Exceptions to confidentiality include:

  • Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, older adult, or vulnerable adult.
  • Serious and imminent risk of harm to yourself.
  • Serious and imminent risk of harm to an identifiable other person.
  • Court orders or other legal requirements.
  • Medical emergencies requiring disclosure for your protection.
  • Professional consultation or required clinical supervision, with disclosure limited to information necessary for quality care.

While every effort is made to protect confidentiality during couples, family, and group counseling, confidentiality among participants cannot be guaranteed.

Professional Ethics

As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate, I adhere to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics and the laws and regulations established by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors. These ethical standards guide my professional conduct and are intended to protect the welfare, dignity, autonomy, and rights of every client.

If ethical or legal issues arise during counseling, I will address them in accordance with these professional standards.
